There are two Alvarez guitars up for review here.. Alvarez was the first acoustic-electric guitar that I owned. I have played many different Alvarez models, including 12 and 6 strings. An alvarez 6 string was what I originally learned to play on. They are a good guitar for the money, especially if you can find older models or Yairi models. The Alzarez line with the highest quality would be that of the old hand made in Japan models. However, since Alvarez did not keep track of non-Yairi serial numbers, it is hard to determine exactly what year older models were made. At the best, you can probably guess in about a 2-4 year timeframe as to when the guitar was made.

The first Alvarez guitar pictured is the AF60CK. This is a Folk size (orchestral size) guitar. It comes with an Alvarez Factory System 600 preamp, which does wonders for this guitar. Having been made out of Koa (now made out of DOA, which is a similar wood), this guitar has a unique sound. It has a different sort of brightness since it doesn't have a spruce top. The Koa back and sides also produce a sound that has lots of mid range but not a lot of bass. When plugged in, this can be corrected and the guitar can have a fuller sound. The model shown is a 2000 model.

The second Alvarez shown here is a mid-1970's 12 string, model 5054. This is one of the Japan-made models which I mentioned earlier. It does not have documentation, so the guitar cannot be pinpointed to the year it was made. This particular guitar is Indian Rosewood back and sides, with a solid spruce top. It has an under the saddle pickup as well, but does not come with any sort of pre-amp. The sound acheived through the pickup is strickly the sound of the guitar. It has full and rich bass, as the wood has aged well. The spruce top also allows for more vibrant mids and trebles, again partly to its ageing. This guitar has some of the upgrades for looks, such as a bound headstock and abalone inlays. It also has the Yairi soundhole rosette, which is not a common feature on the 5054. The 5054's that came with this rosette were partially handmade by Yairi, while still being offered at a middle of the road price between the regular 5054 and the Yairi version.
